ut christmas

Had fun last night with Allison and Jodi. Went to Swiss Chalet for dinner and had the "Festive Special", which comes with a mini Toblerone bar for dessert (Jodi treated us, a Christmas gift...thanks, Jod!). Went back to Allison's, where I had fun decorating her Christmas tree. She claims I was doing her a favour, but I enjoyed it hugely since I don't get to do that sort of thing anymore. She has a ton of interesting decorations, including quite a few obvious teacher gifts. :-)

We sat around and exchanged gifts (got a cool candle holder and Christmas candles from Allison), guzzled Godet's White Chocolate Liqueur and Bailey's Irish Cream, looked at photos I had taken at Allison's housefilk, generally had a great time. I feel very lucky to have such cool music partners and friends (even though they do abuse me sometimes :-D).

I confessed to Allison, by the way, that I only threw out the mini pumpkin she gave me for Hallowe'en YESTERDAY. (I'm sure Annie is REALLY horrified now :-)). It wasn't gushy or anything on the bottom, in case any of you were wondering. Allison laughed at me and said I could have such hung some holly on it for easy seasonal decorating. Put a heart on it when Valentines' came around, a couple of Easter eggs in the spring, and so on...I think she was mocking me. :)

I'm determined to get that dusty, pre-decorated mini Christmas tree out of our locker today!! I am!!

So what are everyone's plans for the holiday season?

skating with nieces

Thanks SO much to Bob Guest, who forwarded the following news item to me:

LONDON (AP) - Scientists already have suggested eating chocolate may
make you happy. Now they say men who indulge in chocolates may live
longer. A study of 7,841 Harvard male graduates found chocolate and
candy eaters - regardless of how voracious their appetite for goodies
    - live almost a year longer than those who abstain. The researchers
said they don't know why this is. They speculate that antioxidants
present in chocolate may have a health benefit. The scientists stress
their findings are preliminary, and other experts caution the
research does not prove the results can be attributed to the
    antioxidants. See

Augh, forgot to bring my dusty mini Christmas tree up from our locker yesterday. But will for sure today. Really, I will!

Went to City Hall with Ruth and my nieces yesterday. The rink was packed with kids (with busloads more unloading every passing minute). I had planned to keep my boots on and walk beside Sara (who is very wobbly on the ice). BUT! Policy has changed since last year, and everyone on the ice HAS to have skates on. Since I haven't skated in over 20 years, I figured it was best to let Ruth be Sara's ice-guide instead. I am determined to learn to skate this winter so I can skate with my nieces next year. I might look into buying second-hand skates somewhere...rentals at City Hall are fairly expensive ($7.50 for adult rentals).

Anyway, Sara was disappointed and I felt like a scummy aunt as I took Annie (who was shrieking because she wanted to stay with Ruth, but she was too small for skates) into City Hall. As soon as we got out of sight of Ruth, however, Annie immediately stopped crying and cheered up again. The library wasn't open yet, so after I peeled the zillion layers of winter clothing off Annie (dreading the moment when I would have to re-layer her) we played in the hallway and looked at the displays. Every few minutes Annie would hug my legs and murmur, "Beebee!", obviously pleased at having all my attention for once. So I guess in the end it wasn't so bad that I couldn't skate with Sara, but I'm still determined to learn to skate. I bought Annie a small toy train in the gift shop. She was delighted, and kept saying, "Tain! Tain! Bawa tain!" which I interpreted as meaning, "Look, I have a train! I'm so pleased. I can't wait to tell Sara about my new train." So I felt compelled to buy Sara a small toy so she wouldn't be jealous.

Looks like I might be mentioned in an Entrepreneur Magazine article, which is cool.

Going to check out a new movie complex in Oakville with Craig tonight (Jeff's in Calgary on a business trip this weekend, hopefully the last out-of-town business trip for a while!).

ohi xmas party

Went to my dad's last night for his annual Ohi/Kajioka family festivities. A huge ton of food! Loved seeing the kids attack the presents after dinner. :-) That's part of Christmas for me, trying to navigate through a room around crumpled wrapping paper and electronic toys, tinsel and ribbon. I helped clean up afterwards, and stayed overnight.

Forgot to give a report of my movie night with Craig. It was the opening day of a big AMC movie complex out in Oakville, and we went to see LIVING OUT LOUD (with Holly Hunter and Danny de Vito) and THE PRINCE OF EGYPT. Enjoyed both movies, and the second had some neat computer graphics. We had dollar hot dogs and 25 cent popcorn. :-) (opening day special)

Topic for today: Christmas card lists. Do any of you have a list of people whose contact with you is a Christmas card, once a year? My general philosophy is that when you reach the once-a-year Christmas card ritual, what's really the point of keeping up the contact at all? If the person is worth your friendship, then both of you should be putting in the effort necessary to maintain it, whether through phonecalls, email, snailmail, or getting together every once in a while.
And of course, that goes both ways. Life is too short for one-sided friendships.

My one exception is my penpal, Frank Mrowka. I met Frank (sort of) years ago when I lived on St. Patrick Street in Village By The Grange in the late 80's. One of my Favourite Things are helium red balloons; it used to be one of my secret vices, probably stemming from a favourite childhood story called THE RED BALLOON (also made into a French film, I think). Anyway, one day I was feeling down, so went out and bought myself a red helium balloon to cheer myself up. My usual ritual was to go somewhere quiet, out in the open, and let it go. In my mind, I would also "let go" of whatever was stressing me out or getting me down that day. Sounds silly, but it usually worked for me.

Anyway, on this particular day, I decided on whim to tie a note to my balloon. I drew a little cartoon sketch of myself and included my name and address (yeah, I know, I was a bit nuts back then) and sent it off. This was from the middle of the street in downtown Toronto, and the sky was very clear that day. A few weeks later, I got a letter from a young boy (7 or 8, I think) in Lockport, New York. Turns out his father had found the balloon in a tree in their fruit orchard! Frank and I corresponded steadily for years. Last I heard, he was around 14 and on the high school basketball team. That was a couple years ago, but I still feel compelled to send him a Christmas card once a year, just for old time's sake.

I don't do the red balloon thing anymore. I don't like the idea of my dying balloons landing who-knows-where, and also now prefer to confront problems and stresses directly rather than "wishing them away". But every so often, I'll pass a party shop or a summer street vendor with a huge handful of balloons, and feel a twinge of nostalgia. :-)

Jeff's coming home from Calgary tonight!

Still haven't finished my Christmas shopping, argh.

why i quit karate

Congrats to Mark Osier, who got his purple belt in Kempo the other day!
Allison is especially happy about this because purple is her favourite
colour :-) (see blatherchat).

I took karate for three months back in university, got up to my yellow belt (which is just one above white belt, which is no belt). It was fun, and great exercise. The only problem...my sensei (teacher) kept yelling at me because -I- didn't yell. You were supposed to yell "kiaii" whenever you did something particularly strenous, like a punch or a kick. Helps focus the energy, you know. I've never been a particularly aggressive type, so I'd let out wimpy little yips that would drive my sensei crazy. Eventually I DID learn to yell properly, and you know what? It was WONDERFULLY SATISFYING. Sometimes I wish for the equivalent outlet now. :-)

So why did I quit karate?

Because at a certain point, you have to start sparring with other people. I suppose I should have realized this, but the thought of physically fighting with someone else was horrifying! Yelling was one thing, but actually fighting?? Of course, you were never supposed to make actual contact with the other person in sparring. In fact, there was supposedly great pride in the fact that one could get extremely close to the other person (with a fist, heel, whatever) but not touch them. You lose major points if you actually make contact. Yikes. I'm outta here... (stop laughing at me, Marko!)

By the way, it's RAINING here in Toronto right now. Yuk.

Going to bring that Christmas tree up from our locker today for sure, yessirree...

3 more shopping days

Finished xmas shopping yesterday, woohoo! Malls are packed, swarming with frantic shoppers and wandering carollers. I kinda miss carolling...a bunch of our friends used to get together for an annual pre-Christmas carol sing at one of our homes, but it's too difficult to schedule that sort of thing now. I still have a pile of carol sheets containing lyrics to every Christmas carol I could lay my hands on. :-) Do any of you do the carolling thing?

HEY, there's a wee bit of snow outside! (yes, I actually looked outside my office window) Unfortunately it tends to melt quickly in downtown Toronto...too much asphalt and steel to make snow feel too welcome.

Paul: thanks for supporting me on the red balloon idea. :-) Andrea: Do you and Tom have your own skates, or do you rent? I bet you were a lot more graceful than I'd be. Annie: maybe I should come up with own kiai-equivalent I can bellow out on suitable occasions! Taunya: what's Bok Fu?
