lining up for star trek

6 pm update: I've updated our links section as well as revamping the main page. Please do
let me know if you notice anything amiss, thanks. Hey, I actually ran into people in Filk Haven tonight! Met Rob Milne from Atlanta, and Geoff from Tampa.

Lined up for several hours for the Star Trek movie yesterday morning. Don't worry, I won't say anything about the movie itself until most of you have had a chnace to see it. :-) It was sort of fun, being clustered in front of the theatre with our fold-out lawn chairs (thanks Luisa and Reid) beneath blankets and coffee and spiced apple cider. The manager of the theatre gave us some movie promo material, and we had several interesting chats with passersby. One was the illustrator of a new Betty Grable bio book, and he gave us tips on the best place to sit in the Eglinton theatre (last row in the floor section, slightly to the left since the sound in the theatre is slightly skewed to the right) as well as showing us a laser printout of one of his illustrations. re: sitting tips...the manager of the theatre disagreed, by the way, saying that the best place to sit was seventh row, middle.

FILK CHATS: Several people have written to me saying that the filk chat room is great, but that they never run into anyone. How about we pick a regular meeting time to increase the chances of people running into each other? Unfortunately I can't guarantee that I'll be there since my schedule is pretty crazy, and I try to keep evenings free to spend with Jeff if he's home, but if I'm free and online, I'll be there. Let's agree that

    7-8 pm EST

will be a general "hang out" time in Filk Haven if anyone's free, ok? Still no guarantee that anyone will show up, of course, but at least there's a better chance. I know this is an awkward time for those overseas, but I wasn't sure how to get around that (suggestions welcome).

Hope to run into some of you sometime!

online groceries

Trying out a new online grocery service...Grocery Gateway. This one
sounds more promising because it can guarantee a 3-hour delivery window. My problem with Food For You was that they couldn't even guarantee that they'd be delivering on a particular DAY, let alone a window of any kind.
Anyway, I put in my registration, and am waiting for confirmation so I can try out my first order.

Way swamped with work these days, and haven't gotten around to getting out our tiny artificial Christmas tree (already decorated) from our storage locker in the basement. Is that sad or what?

X-Files Christmas special tonight!

grocery gateway follow-up

Finally updated my Geeky School Picture page,
for those interested. Feel free to submit geeky photos of your own! Please note that these pics must be geeky SCHOOL photos. :-)

Jeff and I went to the Horseshoe Tavern on Queen St. last night to see a friend's band perform...lots of fun!

Grocery Gateway called today to confirm my registration and give me access to their service (no membership fee, I think they just wanted to make sure they weren't delivering groceries to a non-existent address). So I did some online shopping today. Much better interface than Food For You, and I like the fact that you can see a small picture of the product you're buying. You just click on the image, and it's added to your virtual shopping cart. A running total at the bottom of the screen keeps me informed about how much I'm spending.

I ran into several error 400s, however, and ended up having to phone the company since I couldn't get my order processed. The guy on the phone (Steve) was courteous and got my order through, but said that the error was likely on my end, not his. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, and see what happens next time. He did take down info, though, and said he'd investigate it. In any case, my groceries will supposedly be delivered tomorrow afternoon. I purposely ordered a wide range of groceries (fresh produce to frozen goods to canned) to see what kind of condition they would arrive in.

Crossing my fingers to hope that this online shopping service works out! They deliver to the Greater Toronto Area. I'll let you know how it works out...

christmas stuff

More favourite snacks:

  • Milky Way spread on crackers (thanks, Diana!)
  • microwaved tofu with grated ginger and Kikkoman shoyu (soy sauce) on top
  • sliced cucumber with dab of miso spread

To Chris: yummy-sounding fruit salad recipe!

To Annie: I used to be a major Christmas buff. :-) When we lived out in the country, I went the whole nine yards (where DID that term come from) in terms of Christmas stuff. Baked cookies, made my own wreaths from pine boughs gathered in the forest and decorated with flowers and herbs I had grown, picked, and dried during the summer. Decorated the bannister with a ribboned garland, set out Christmas decorations all through the house, including a display of porcelain figures with Santa and his reindeer on a bed of white cotton. Always did a real Christmas tree, lots of ornaments collected and made over the years (I still like to collect Christmas ornaments when we go travelling). Made elaborate snow sculpture people on the lawn (once I made a snow sculpture family, complete with snow dog and snow tv). Hung up seed-studded suet for the birds, sprinkled nuts around as a xmas treat for the squirrels.

Unfortunately we don't have room for lots of Christmas stuff in our city place, real trees aren't allowed in the building (though it's obvious from pine needles sprinkled in the elevator in January that some tenants are furtively sneaking them in), and I don't have time for elaborate Christmas decorating and baking anymore. I've also grown a bit jaded, I think. :-) My favourite time of Christmas is the time we spend with our nieces...children add a LOT to the holiday season, I think.

Happy Hannukah to those who celebrate it, by the way!!

Alisa: the picture was taken out in Winnipeg a few years ago when we (Jodi, Allison and I) were invited out there courtesy the Winnipeg Musician's Hat Fund. :-) One of Dandelion Wine's buddies was/is a talented fellow named Alan, and he was kind enough to give me Northumbrian bagpipe lessons as well as a lesson in playing the bones. I need to practice a lot more, tho. He also plays a mean Celtic penny whistle. :-) As for my bones (rhythm bones, that is), I was kindly given a pair by Brenda Sutton at a Filkontario several years ago. I was admiring them at a Dead Penguin Party, and she just GAVE them to me!!!! She is incredible. I wrote a song in her honour called Shake Them Bones (the chorus goes, "Brenda Sutton told me, 'Shake them bones....'" :-)

For those who have Macs...altho you can access the filk chat room via a regular browser, you might also consider using a Mac client. I'm using Mac IRC, and it's working out pretty well altho it took a bit of getting used to the interface.

Debbie's Tips For Christmas Shopping In Crowds:

These tips actually work (at least for me), and keep me sane when I'm
being jostled or waiting in lines...

  • Bring a Walkman with some of your favourite music.
  • Bring a book.
  • Don't wear a coat if possible (I'm about 30 seconds' walk from
the vast Toronto underground, so usually do my Christmas shopping
without having to lug around a bulky winter coat)
  • Wear comfortable shoes.
  • Don't shop until you're exhausted. You're more likely to
    get irritable and impatient.
  • Plan to reward yourself in some way at the end of the
shopping trip, even in a very small way. I tend to reward
myself with one (1) chocolate truffle. :-)

Grocery Gateway Report:

Got a call about 20 minutes ago from the driver, who sounded
unusually cheery, saying he was leaving to make my delivery, and to
confirm delivery instructions. I had selected the delivery
time window of 1-4 pm. And by my watch, they now have 15 minutes
to make that window...will they come through? Will my search for
an online grocery shopping service find fulfillment?? WILL I
GET A LIFE???? Full report tomorrow...

Saw Fame last night with Cathy at the Royal Alex. Fun to watch, and the choreography was incredibly energetic...I swear, some of those dancers were made of rubber.

grocery gateway: thumbs up

The groceries I ordered online from Grocery Gateway came ON TIME and IN GOOD CONDITION. As a test, I ordered a big bag of chips and some tomatoes in addition to other stuff, and both arrived looking fine. Plus the delivery guy was cute! I'll have to wear something nicer next time ;-). Anyway, found out that Grocery Gateway is in a pilot program right now, and officially launches next month. I tried to give the CDG (Cute Delivery Guy) a tip and he REFUSED it, saying that they weren't allowed to take tips right now, but that they'd appreciate email feedback about the service instead. Wow.

But best of all...THIS MEANS I CAN SPEND EVEN MORE TIME ONLINE!!! SOON I'LL NEVER HAVE TO LEAVE MY OFFICE HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHm, I think I need a holiday.

Allison, Jodi, and I are having our own Christmas party tonight, woohoo!
