MovableType upgrade chaos

Sara at riding camp last week, where she won a first and
second prize ribbon in the final show.

Still sorting out my MovableType upgrade mess. I've restored My Life In A Nutshell, Dandelion Report FilkFAQ, The Dandelion Report, Blatherings. Next up: Inkygirl. If things look wonky, that's why. Thanks for your patience!

Hey, check out the main page of the York Liberal, which features a great photo of my music partner, Allison! The main story is about Allison, Urban Tapestry and filk.

sauna bathing

Spider on our deck railing. Anyone know what kind it is?

***(Update Tue Sept 7/2004: Had a major problem while upgrading to the new version of Movable Type. Looks like I have to do a full reinstall, ugh. Fortunately I did backups of most of my blogs, including this one, but I may have to recreate some of the templates. If you notice anything wonky, like not being able to post comments. that's why. Anyway, thanks for your patience.)***

Congrats to Liam O'Donnell for having Feeding Change named as one of the 10 Top Blogs in Canada this month! Also cool to see Daily Dose of Imagery on the list, another of my favourite blogs.

Woohoo, the newest version of MovableType has been released! Improvements include dynamic pages, post scheduling, and a plugin pack including MTBlackList. Can't wait to get home so I can download and install this.

Jeff and I are at the cottage; we decided to go late last week.

Went swimming yesterday...the water was pretty chilly, just on the verge of being too cold to swim comfortably. After the first few minutes (of trying not to scream), however, it was fine.

By the way, I'm totally hooked on bathing in the sauna. I prefer using an old-fashioned pot with a spout and handle rather than the camp shower set-up; I just dip it into a big pot of water that's been heated over the sauna coals, pour it over my head. Then I soap up using some Camp Suds (tm), dump on more hot water. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Bathing takes more time this way, but I find it more intimate, comforting, sensual. Instead of rushing through washing up with my mind on the day ahead, I luxuriate in the moment, closing my eyes and giving myself up to the inevitability of heat and steam, the fragrance of damp cedar, hot water and soap sliding over my skin. Then the wonderful shock of cold when I jump in the lake at the end of it all.

And that's part of what I love so much about the cottage: it's a place where we're forced to slow down, focus on and appreciate one thing at a time rather than multitask every minute of the day.

Now if only we could learn to do this back in the city....

Wordgoddess collab: "I"

Today's Blathering is for Wordgoddess. Assignment: To write a post in which each paragraph begins with "I...".

----------------

I am not a chocolate snob. I like all kinds of chocolate: dark, white, milk, baking. Especially chocolate with raspberry or other fruit flavours.

I had a pet hermit crab named Martha when I was a teenager. Very dull. It took me two weeks before I finally noticed she was dead.

I'm learning German. I hate dative verbs.

I co-wrote a song about Sex and Chocolate. You can listen to a soundclip here. That's my music partner Jodi singing lead, not me.

I hate it when people behind me kick my chair in a movie theatre.

I have a subclinical detached retina.

I wrote a book.

I have always hated public speaking, to the point where I avoided courses in university that had spoken presentations as part of the curriculum. When I got involved with Inkspot, I started forcing myself to do interviews, workshops, other talks because I was so excited about the project and wanted other people to get excited, too. It was good for me, but I still hate public speaking.

I'm allergic to cats.

I sold my Web site to a U.S. company in June/2000 and moved to Philadelphia for six months as an employee, without my husband. After the Internet craze meltdown, Jeff and I spent a great deal of time at the cottage during our sabbatical and during that time, I realized that my entire experience in the corporate world could be compared in many ways to stacking firewood. Here's my Woodpile Philosophy.

I never went out on a date until university. I didn't go to my high school prom because I didn't want to spend the entire time standing awkwardly on the sidelines while all the other girls got asked for a dance except for me. No, it didn't even cross my mind back then that I didn't have to wait, that -I- could ask guys to dance. I've smartened up since then.

I like food movies.

I used to have recurring dream in which I'm standing in a sunny field of tall grass with my brother. He's smiling at me, and the sun is in his hair. When I wake from the dream, there are tears on my face.

I've been a a cover story.

I wore pink horn-rimmed glasses when I was little. I chose them myself. What was I thinking???

I once got a marriage proposal from a total stranger in e-mail. I declined.

I cry during sappy television commercials.

I like living in Toronto.

I went on a canoe trip in the Nahanni. It remains my all-time favourite trip.

I used to like writing songs with the words/phrases "puke" or "pert breasts" for my music partners to sing because it amused me. Now I don't, because I know they'll make me sing lead.

I taught piano for over twenty years, sometimes part-time, sometimes fulltime. I play piano, flute, penny whistle, Celtic harp, guitar, assorted bangy percussion things...with varying degrees of ability.

I sometimes get frustrated and depressed about my tendinitis, which has lasted a year and a half so far, not being able to type normally for longer than 20 minutes at a time before it starts hurting. Sometimes it's hard to stay cheery and optimistic.

I miss playing my harp.

I like skinnydipping in the lake at the cottage.

I have an autobiographical comic strip.

I like reading in the bathtub.

I tried reading Lord of the Rings a few years ago and actually liked it this time. Enough to start a comic strip and write a song about the experience. I blame Allison.

I'm a morning person.

I still think Captain Kirk was the best Star Trek captain.

I know, I'm a nerd.

I am drawn to people with a strong creative streak, who are passionate about life.

I love backrubs. Foot rubs. Hand rubs. The Sutherland Chan Clinic is my favourite massage place. I usually go about two or three times a year as a special treat, using birthday money from my mom-in-law. I still have 30 minutes left from my last birthday gift and have the gift certificate tacked up on my bulletin board. I like looking at it and knowing that I can use it anytime I want.

I don't like getting backrubs / foot rubs / hand rubs from people I don't know very well unless they're Trained Professionals.

I love the smell of fresh basil, cinnamon and clean babies.

I want to go to Paris someday.

I used to hate it when people told me I look like my mother. Now I'm glad.

I think about dying. Sometimes I think I understand how it could be a peaceful and welcome thing for the very old or very weary, like getting into bed after a long and gruelling day. Most of the time, though, I feel panic at the idea of dying. There's too much to do, to see. People I love. I don't want to miss out on any of it.

I like compartmentalized food.

Yes, that's ice on the lake.

google, japanese pesos and outdoor showers

Three years ago, I posted a Blathering with the picture above with the subject header "Japanese peso?". My page was obviously picked up by search engines because over the next few years, I received at least two dozen e-mail messages from people offering or asking for information about the Japanese peso.

I finally got around to updating the original Blathering with the new information, but can't help but think of all the other Blatherings I've posted over the years on various topics, all being picked up by search engines. As a direct result of my Blatherings, I have sold articles and photographs, been interviewed by a newspaper reporter about my interest in the Iron Chef, hired to draw cartoons, design Web pages. FYI, according to my stats, popular search referrers include: "livejournal user pics", "inkspot", "lord of the rings cartoons", "bubble tea", "turning 40", "chocolate bars", "asian eyes", "young writers", "japanese peso", "waiting for frodo", and "outdoor shower" (!!). I just don't get it.

Helps hammer home the message that pretty much ANYTHING you put online is likely to be picked up by a search engine, even if it's password-protected. See this article, "Don't Expect Privacy on the Web".

Speaking of search engines...

Interesting to see what's happening in Googleland recently, from the extra invites being offered to Gmail users recently to the rumours that Google's developing an instant messaging initiative. Google is also apparently blocking third-party Gmail notifiers, causing some controversy.

I'm pretty happy with Gmail so far. I have some minor quibbles, but overall I like it, especially the threading and keyboard shortcuts. I've already made my Gmail account my public e-mail in my personal homepage, Market Watch column, newsgroup posting address. It seems to reliably filter spam messages.

I'm sticking with my regular e-mail address for vital and ongoing e-mail correspondences, but am sending copies to my Gmail address for archiving.

insta-sushi

Mabuta is a 16-year-old student from Japan living with my dad these days, and on the weekend he made dinner, a sort of "make-your-own" norimaki sushi.

Mabuta's sushi method differs from the way my mother made it in that guests are expected to assemble their own sushi rolls into handrolls. He also opted for more convenient ready-made ingredients, cutting down on prep time.

Mabuta.

And it was GOOD, yum. Very messy since some of us (okay, ME) tended to try cramming much more into our rolls than could reasonably fit, but lots of fun!

Egg, which will be cut into strips.

Fillings included: cucumber, artificial crab, egg, avocado, mayo (I don't like mayo in my sushi so left this out), smoked salmon. My mom used to use shiitake mushrooms (involved soaking in a shoyu mixture), pink fish powder stuff (can't remember the name but would recognize the package), eel, gourd strips (also involved soaking), some other stuff. I know how to make it but it takes a lot of time. I like dipping my norimaki in a mixture of shoyu and wasabi.

Ok, I'm hungry.

Sushi rice cooling in trays just before dinner.

Now that my tendinitis has improved enough for me to do some chopping, I'm starting to cook fun things again. Right now I'm trying out recipes in my copy of Hiroko Shimbo's The Japanese Kitchen, a gift from Parki a while back.

I made Tori to Kashunattsu no miso Itame last night (chicken, cashews and miso in a wok) with brown rice and was pretty happy with the results. Had the leftovers for lunch today. Tonight I'm doing a much simpler Buto no Shogayaki (ginger-flavored pan-fried pork, miso soup and rice).

I love walking to St. Lawrence Market in the late afternoon to buy fresh ingredients and cook with them right away. Today I brought home a huge bunch of basil as well. I don't NEED basil, but it only cost $2 and I love the smell! So I put the bunch in a flower vase and set it in the living room. Jeff's going to think I'm nuts when he comes home, I'm sure. :-)
