Hot

Dealing with the heat

I am SO not a hot weather person, especially if it's really humid. Like how it is now, in Toronto.

I would far rather be walking around in a blizzard than in a heat wave. My reasoning: I can always add on more layers if I'm too cold. If I'm too hot, I can only take off so many.

I've never enjoyed lying on a hot beach in the hot sun for more than, oh, say ten minutes before I get bored and/or too hot. I'd rather stay in the water until I'm wrinkled or get eaten by sharks or leeches, depending on the body of water.

I'm already yearning for autumn.

Survey: What about the rest of you? Favourite season? Hot or cold preference? Blizzard or heatwave?

David Francey at Hugh's Room

Me and David Francey!

First off, congrats to our friends Andrew and Jenny, who are engaged to be married! This news made my day. And then we attended the David Francey concert, which capped off an already wonderful Monday...

Since Dave Clement introduced me to the music of David Francey several years ago, I've accumulated all his CDs and have gotten Jeff hooked as well. Last night, we attended a concert at Hugh's Room with Allison, Jodi, Walter, Sally, Sue and Tom; Sue organized the outing months ago.

For both Jeff and me, this concert ranked as one of our all-time favourites. The venue, for one thing, is wonderful. Allison and I had already attended a concert in Hugh's Room (Tom Paxton and Christine Lavin) a couple of years ago and had a similar experience. The sound system in Hugh's Room is excellent, the atmosphere intimate, the food delicious.

I found the audience, just like the one I attended before, was attentive and respectful of the performer as well as other members of the audience. No one chatted while David Francey was performing...we were all there to listen. Bravo! was there filming a documentary but was happily unobtrusive.

Another reason we enjoyed the concert so much was the high level of performance. So many times, pro recording artists sound great on CD but noticeably sloppier in live performance where they can't rely on ProTools and other tech tools to tweak and cover up mistakes. David Francey, Shane Simpson and Geoff Somers, on the other hand, gave an impressively tight performance with just voices and acoustic instruments...no fancy effects or equipment.

One of the benefits of hearing David Francey live was being able to hear all the banter between songs, the background of each. David was a WONDERFUL storyteller with a wry sense of humour. His sincere and down-to-earth personality carries over into his songs.

Born in Scotland in 1954, David and his family immigrated to Toronto when he was twelve years old; they now live in Southern Ontario. He's won two Juno awards (he was still a construction worker when he won his first Juno) and has done workshops with artists like Garnet Rogers, the Ennis Sisters, Ray Bonneville, Kate Rusby, James Keelaghan, Sylvia Tyson, and Ashley MacIsaac. I have his four CDs (Torn Screen Door, Far End of Summer, Skating Rink, Waking Hour) and picked up his newest CD at the concert:

Just before dinner was served, we noticed that David Francey was standing near our table, chatting with someone. Jeff saw my expression and suggested that I go talk to him.

"But what would I say?" I asked, afraid I'd just go into drooling incoherent fangirl mode.

Allison suggested I ask him for a photo...brilliant idea! I was a bit nervous about approaching him, but he was SO nice about it. Didn't flinch at my enthusiasm, had an easygoing smile and acted as if he had all the time in the world. Thanks to Walter for taking the photo.

Huge thanks to Sue Posteraro for organizing this concert outing...both Jeff and I enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. Great music, great food, and great company: it was a wonderful way to spend a Monday evening.

:-)

Above: Tom gave furry flowers to each member of Urban Tapestry. It was so great to see him again! He and Sue were pretty darned cute together, I have to say. And it looks as if Tom's going to be MOVING TO TORONTO BY THE END OF THE YEAR (!!!!!!!). He and Sue are going to be living downtown and within easy access of the subway, yay!

You can see more photos from the evening here.

If you ever have the chance, do go hear David Francey live. Here is his upcoming concert schedule, which includes appearances in New Hampshire, Newfoundland, British Columbia, Quebec, New York, Alberta and Ontario.

And I heartily recommend Hugh's Room as a concert venue. You can see their full concert schedule here, including concerts by Jane Siberry, Arrogant Worms, Christine Lavin, Tanglefoot and James Keelaghan.

NYC visit

Lego Batman

Above: Lego Batman at FAO Schwartz in NYC. Also check out Lego Chewbacca and Lego Hagrid.

Jeff and I went to NYC this past weekend for his father's 70th birthday celebration. We hadn't been to the city since before 9/11, and I noticed a much stronger police presence than in the past. Otherwise, New York seemed just as bustling as ever, a blur of people rushing about and yellow cabs honking.

Thanks to those who answered my booze question in LJ. Jeff and his dad both safely transported a few bottles of Innis & Gunn across the border with no problems:

This beer, introduced to Jeff by our brother-in-law Kaarel, is currently his favourite.

We visited the new 24-hour Apple store:

I did some work on a writing project in the New York Public Library:

I -so- love this library. I wish someone would hurry up and invent transporters here so I could work here whenever I wanted to. Inspirational atmosphere, quiet, spacious, plus (unlike Toronto libraries) the tables in the main reading room all have numerous power outlets and ethernet connections.

More photos and New York visit remarks in a future Blatherings. We did see and do other things in New York, but my life has recently gotten way busy with work and impending houseguests, plus I need to finish unpacking. Hope you all had a great weekend!

Looking forward to going to the David Francey concert tonight with Jeff, Walter, Allison, Jodi, Sue Posteraro and Tom Jeffers!

Kaarel birthday, favourite sandwich survey

Kaarel and me

Happy birthday to my brother-in-law, Kaarel!

The two pictures below are from birthday cards I've made him in the past. This photo is from our University of Toronto days, when Kaarel and Ruth were pretending to be doing homework:

This was from a birthday card I made for Kaarel in 2001:

Had fun at Doug's and Jen's last night! After a delicious dinner of barbecued lamb and curry couscous, we took a stroll along the Humber River before returning for homemade chocolate brownies with fresh raspberries. Yummm. Doug and Jen have been married for just over a year...see the photo just below.

First dance

I've nearly finished one of my bigger illustration projects (illos for a client's soon-to-be-launched Web site), about to start the next. Other projects: middle reader novel for young people and an article for Writer's Digest magazine.

I've started to use Mori to help me keep my project notes organized (thanks to Jeff for telling me about this app). It's yet another digital notebook program, but has a simpler/cleaner interface than SuperNoteCard. It's more of a database of notes than an outliner, with some outlining capability.

I'm also starting to use AntiRSI by Onne Gorter, a free program for Mac OS X that helps prevent RSI (repetitive strain injury) and other computer related stress by reminding the user to take breaks. I especially like the fact that you can tell the program when you're taking a natural break, in which case the program resets its timer to zero instead of reminding you to take a timed break too soon. You can also specify "micro pauses" between the longer work breaks.

My indoor herbs are continuing to flourish. Jeff was puzzling over how I've been able to keep them alive since I have a history of killing houseplants. His conclusion: I'm able to take better care of these plants because I know I can EAT them. :-)

sandwich

He may have a point. I've been SO enjoying cooking with these herbs...this morning I made some scrambled eggs with freshly-picked chives and a sprinkling of goat cheese. Yesterday I made my current favourite sandwich, an attempted re-creation of a sandwich I had in Paris: fresh baguette sliced in half, filled with alternating slices of brie and tomato, salt and pepper, fresh basil leaves, then grilled. The basil was my addition but I figured that the basil and tomato would go well together. I was happy with the results. :-)

Another favourite sandwich of mine is my friend Parki's goat cheese and grilled red pepper sandwich.

Will Write For Chocolate updated

Why it pays to understand copyright

Will Write For Chocolate has been updated. My column topic this week: "Clearing Up Copyright Confusion." The cartoon above was also created to help illustrate the importance of understanding copyright issues when selling one's work.

wwfc-update

Many thanks to my sweetie-pie husband for spending several hours yesterday helping me sort out my digital recording issues: finding needed cords, connecting up my keyboard to my laptop, figuring out how to connect my pre-amps, installing needed drivers. Sadly, it looks like I'm unable to use my microphone to record until M-Audio updates its driver for the Duo USB Microphone Preamp so it runs on Intel machines.

:-(

Supposedly they have promised to have one ready within 6-8 weeks. Fingers crossed.

I can use the built-in microphone in my laptop for scratch recordings, so I can still pass recordings to Allison & Jodi to show them my new songs, but it doesn't look like I'll be able to do anything resembling commercial recordings yet.

My magnetic wall survived the air conditioner installation, yay!

Sent off my edited manuscript to my agent, who is going to start sending it out into the world. Thanks again to Jeff, Allison, Ruth, Dave C. and Parki for taking the time to read through my mss.
